I've just recently discovered a very useful piece of linux software that
I think the list might be interested in. I don't know if you are aware
of this or not, but for about a month now the mplayer project, a linux
multimedia player, has been able to play quicktime files with out
actually running the Apple quicktime player. Instead mplayer just loads
the windows Quicktime DLLs. Just recently, someone has created a handy
program call mplayerplug-in, http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/, to
embed mplayer into any browser capable of using netscape style plugins.
With the latest release of mplayer (0.9-rc3) and the latest release of
mplayerplug-in (0.32), it is possible to play (almost) any quicktime or
windows media video on the internet. Mplayerplug-in has been able to
handle any move I've thrown at it, including all of the trailers at
www.apple.com/trailers. I hope you all find this useful.
