I would think that a couple of cheap USB cameras hooked up
to that dusty old PC tower in the closet somewhere may fit
your friend's needs, assuming you can work with the 3 meter
or 5 meter cable length limits.  Otherwise you'd need
more towers.

I also saw a WiFi camera at Fry's, but those are a bit pricey,
and you don't want to be broadcasting security camera images
over WiFi. :)
